Smith was the President of the AOA softball division in 2011. Willie officiated the IHSA state Softball finals five different times in 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2010. Willie was elected to the Illinois Coaches Association Softball Umpire Hall of Fame in 2004. He retired from active officiating in 2019, after 37 years of service.
