A football and basketball official for over 30 years, Herrera also officiated baseball, softball, and lacrosse. Octavio has served as IHSA clinician and assignor in football and basketball. He officiated the IHSA football state championship games in 2006, 2009 and 2012. Herrera has served on the IHSA football advisory committee. Among his accolades are the Abe Glick Award Winner in 2013 and the IHSA Football Official of the Year in 2014. Octavio served as basketball division president from 1996-1997
