Breakout Session Synopsis
Breakout Session # 1: “Maintaining Order On and Off the Court”
Managing people can be one of the most difficult parts of officiating for a new official; as players, coaches and spectators all provide challenging situations. IHSA Clinician Joe Spagnolo provides his take on nearly 40 years of experiences on the basketball court and reviews ideal practices for dealing with each specific group. This presentation is geared for newer officials that have not developed a successful strategy in game management skills.
Breakout Session # 2: “Rule 10: Fouls and Penalties”
The last rule in the rule book is probably the most important and warrants a detailed review before each season. 22-year AOA member and two-time IHSA state final official, Don Williams will cover the assessment of penalties but will also examine contact situations: the automatics; what is and what is not a foul; incidental contact; disruption of rhythm, speed, balance and quickness; freedom of movement; and many more of the “gray” parts of contact. This is an excellent review to get all officials on the same page to start their season.
